About Richard Black: “My heart is to empower leaders and see churches transformed.”
Thriving Churches HQ was founded by Richard Black, an ordained minister, qualified counsellor, and long-time advocate for the health and flourishing of churches and their leaders. With decades of experience in church revitalisation and missional leadership, Richard trained under Alan Hirsch and was part of the founding team of Forge, supporting missional movements across New Zealand.
Richard was the first in New Zealand to train as a Natural Church Development coach and has worked extensively as a church developer, leading local churches through seasons of renewal and transformation. Sensing God’s call to further support leaders’ wellbeing, he completed a Master of Counselling with distinction, researching emotional health in church leadership and identifying key pressure points that impact pastors’ effectiveness.
He has since expanded this research through postgraduate study and over a decade of practical work providing professional supervision, leadership coaching, and pastoral care training for Christian leaders nationwide. In 2010, Richard founded Mind Health, a counselling and training organisation focused on mental health and wellbeing.
Thriving Churches HQ brings together Richard’s years of ministry, research, and hands-on experience, with a clear purpose: to support, strengthen, and empower local churches and their leaders to thrive.
